Finding Balance and Healing the Masculine and the Feminine

The New Moon in Libra, on October 10th, at 11:48 AM, is calling for a resolution between the masculine and the feminine. Mars and Venus, representing the masculine and the feminine, start this month off in an intense square, the effects of which will continue until the next New Moon.

As wounding comes to the surface, coupled with emotions and conflict, we are called to draw our awareness inward and to go deeper. We want to have our eyes open, and our “ears perked” for triggers and old patterns emerging, especially in our relationship dynamics. This will help guide us to what we are meant to learn, face, and heal at this time.

In the midst of this powerful square is the harmonious New Moon in Libra, telling us the answer is in the balance of things. Let us now dive more fully into what this New Moon in Libra is about and how we can work with this powerful astrological moment in time.

New Moon in Libra Overview

On the New Moon, the Sun and Moon come together at 17 degrees of Libra, initiating us into the next lunar cycle. The themes presented in this report will last for the duration of this moon cycle, until the following New Moon, with a culmination of energy arriving at the Full Moon.

As this is the start of a new cycle, it is a time for setting intentions for the lunar month ahead. By aligning ourselves with the astrological energies of this time, we can better understand what intentions to set and what themes are supported for us to reflect on. New Moons are a time for reflection, drawing inward, setting intentions, and resting.

Going inward is a strong theme of this New Moon with so many planets retrograde, which now includes Venus, one of the most prominent and important planets of this New Moon. As the planetary ruler of Libra, she is the ruler of this New Moon. Below, we’ll explore more about this Venus retrograde and what it might mean for you. But before that, let’s dive into what a New Moon in Libra is about.

Libra is the sign of relationships, harmony, beauty, peace, and balance. Its symbol is the scales, which symbolize finding balance and equality between two things. As such, Libra wants to understand both sides of a situation and find a solution that honors both. It is the diplomat, the one who is focused on conflict resolution, with a devotion to fairness, truth, and justice.

With Venus as its ruler, Libra is also connected to the arts, intimacy, romance, charisma, aesthetics, and relationship dynamics. Considering this, we want to reflect on the concept of relationship on this New Moon.

What does it mean to be in relationship? What does it mean to be in relationship to yourself, another, who you share your home with (including plants and animals), and the land you live on? What does it mean to be in relationship to the earth, sky, and stars? To your ancestors, spirit guides, Higher Self, and the Great Spirit within all things? To the masculine and feminine principles of life?

In truth, these are all connected. Our relationship to ourselves reflects our relationship to everything else. What I believe this New Moon is also asking us is: what is our relationship to the feminine?

The feminine is our bodies, emotions, intuition, and soft, receptive, nurturing nature. It is the land, the animals, and Mother Gaia. With Venus retrograde, this is also about our relationship to our shadow, challenging emotions, and the things we don’t want to acknowledge or face about ourselves or our relationships.

Libra is about the harmonious flow of love that occurs in healthy, balanced relationships. This is a time for looking at our relationship to all aspects of life. This New Moon will help us uncover where the blocks are in this harmonious flow — where we withhold love, what wounds limit this flow, and where we are called to let things go in order for this flow of love to move more freely.

In addition, this is a time for reflecting on balance and harmony. Where are we called to have more balance in our lives? What helps inspire an inner state of harmony? These are questions to ask yourself and contemplation on this Libra New Moon. There is likely to be some intense energy within and around you, so the practice of cultivating an inner sanctuary of harmony, balance, and peace is highly supportive of this time.

However, that does not mean to push away the hard or challenging emotions, but to let them flow, which often means feeling them more fully. It is through this process of honoring your inner state and expressing your emotions that release occurs, which supports an inner harmonious state of being.

In other words, it is the acceptance and welcoming of yourself, in all your complexities and emotions, that generates this peace. It is through the fighting, denying, pushing away, and judgment of ourselves that often causes inner conflict and turmoil.

This is one of the major lessons of Venus retrograde in Scorpio, which is allowing yourself to fully feel what you don’t want to feel. She is inviting us to explore our shadow, and to bring love to the places we deem unlovable. Let us now take a closer look at what this Venus retrograde is about.

Venus Retrograde

As mentioned above, Venus went retrograde at 8 degrees of Scorpio on October 3rd and will be retrograde until November 13th, when she stations direct at 22 degrees of Libra. Interestingly, Venus stations retrograde in the same signs (and close to the same zodiacal degrees) every eight years. In 2018, she went retrograde through Scorpio and Libra from October 5th until November 16th.

Look back at that time in your life and reflect on what was occurring for you, especially in regards to relationships, intimacy, sexuality, your shadow self, and what’s considered taboo or shameful. Those things may be coming back up again for further healing and understanding.

Venus retrograde cycles call us to reflect, revisit, reimagine, restructure, or refine things related to our relationships, inner values, money (or resources), and our feminine nature. Things from past relationships can come back up for us to process further. In a literal sense, this can be an actual past relationship, intimate or friendship, that comes back for us to look at again.

Because Venus turns retrograde in the sign of Scorpio, this can be an intense and shadowy process. It is the lover goddess descending into the underworld to expose what’s hidden in our feminine nature. Venus is related to cleanliness, beauty, and harmony. She’s going into our shadow to “clean things up,” and to bring beauty, love, and harmony to our darkest corners.

Scorpio is passionate and intense. It is the investigator who can get to the root of something, sometimes obsessively so. It is emotional intimacy, sexuality, and all things taboo and mysterious. It is also the sign of inner transformation; death and rebirth; facing your shadow self and all the egoic identities that no longer serve and laying them to rest.

Our inner feminine is being initiated into a deep alchemical process of transformation. This is about exploring our relationship to intimacy, sexuality, emotions, vulnerability, and how those things come up in relationship to another.

As mentioned above, this could be an emotionally charged time, as Scorpio is one of the most emotionally intense signs of the zodiac. Because it is our inner feminine in the depths of these emotions, it is less about conceptually understanding them, and more about deepening more fully into the sensation of them.

It is about allowing yourself to fully feel what you are meant to feel, and in doing so, the emotions naturally move and release. Emotions are water — ever-flowing. It is when we deny them, dam them up, and judge them that they remain stuck and stagnant. Use breathwork, movement, and sound to help move the emotions. Give yourself a safe space to embody what you feel.

Not only are we likely to notice these dynamics within ourselves, but also in others, especially in masculine-feminine presenting relationships. This is exposed through the aggravated square between Venus and Mars.

Venus and Mars Square: Highlighting Conflict between the Masculine and Feminine

There’s no denying that there is extreme conflict occurring between men and women at this time. While the masculine and feminine are principles, rather than genders (and every one of us has both), men often represent the masculine while women represent the feminine (in general).

Right now, the abuse of the masculine towards the feminine is on stark display. Now this isn’t just between men and women, but also between the exertion of will (masculine) over the land (feminine). There are examples everywhere of the power imbalance happening between the two.

In our personal lives, old conflicts in our relationships could come to the surface. We want to be extra aware of triggers, old wounds, and shadowy relationship patterns occurring at this time. We want to be careful to not react from this place. And if a trigger or reaction does occur, it is ultimately an invitation for us to go deeper, to see what’s happening beneath the trigger or pattern. In doing so, we initiate another layer of healing, understanding, release, and resolution.

We also want to reflect on what these external masculine-feminine dynamics are bringing up within us (such as the Cornell case). This is an opportunity to lovingly tend to these wounded parts of Self.

For most women, it is unfortunately easy to identify with the sexual wounding of the feminine and being on the other end of toxic masculine abuse. I feel a primordial rage arising in the collective feminine, instigating change in our collective consciousness. If you feel this energy, I encourage you to let this rage out healthily and consciously and to allow yourself to feel the weight and grief of it (to the degree that serves). In doing so, you are helping to move this energy in the collective field.

What I also want to point out, which may be harder for us to identify, is how we embody the toxic masculine. In its simplest form, this is about the ways we exert our will over another’s to achieve an egoical or shadowy desire. For most of us, this is very subtle and small, but is still how we participate in this unhealthy dynamic.

Essentially, are we living in right relationship to all that is? In what ways are we called to live in more harmony and integrity with all of life? The feminine is all life-forms; it is our bodies, intuition, emotions, the land, and animals. In what ways does your inner masculine dominate, override, or belittle these things?

Whenever something dramatic happens on the world stage that captures our attention, it is a mirror, calling us to address those things in our own lives. In doing our individual healing work, we contribute to the healing of the collective. As such, this is a time for digging deeper into the unhealthy masculine and feminine dynamics in our own lives, internally and externally.

Where does there need to be more balance? Where are you called to forgive? What is in need of tending and nurturing love? What old wounds are coming to the surface? What wisdom do they have to offer you now?

In what ways are we called to release our victim identity, and realize that nothing outside of us can ever take away our worth, sovereignty, or the ever-flowing love within us?

Libra is calling for there to be a resolution as well as justice. It is the sign of truth and fairness. The collective feminine is calling for the masculine to step up and to take accountability. It is calling for the masculine to step into his Divine, healthy, sovereign self.

We are at a reckoning between these two energies. We are at a choice point. As a collective, how do we wish to move forward? Will we address the root of the matter, or only deal with the symptoms? Will we continue to perpetuate the energies of the past, or will we choose something different?

Reflective Questions

  • What is my relationship to the feminine? To my body, emotions, intuition, and soft, receptive nature?

  • Does it feel easy to embody and relax into my feminine nature? Or do I have resistance to this part of myself?

  • What supports my inner feminine?

  • What helps me generate a state of inner harmony?

  • Where am I called to have more balance in my life?

  • What was occurring for me during Venus’ last retrograde through Scorpio and Libra eight years ago (October 5th until November 16th, 2018)? Are there any similar themes occurring for me now?

  • When I sink into my body, what do I feel? What’s lying underneath those emotions?

  • Are there any old wounds surfacing around sexuality, intimacy, or vulnerability? How is my body asking me to tend to these wounds?

  • Are there any old wounds or unhealthy, shadow dynamics surfacing in my relationships? How am I called to address these things in a way that serves myself and the other?

  • What does the healthy, balanced feminine feel like in my body? Would anything in my life change or feel different if I embodied more of my healthy, balanced feminine?

  • What does the healthy, balanced masculine feel like in my body? Would anything in my life change or feel different if I embodied more of the healthy, balanced masculine?

Practice Ideas

As mentioned above, give yourself time and space to deepen into your body and emotions. Put on some music, go to an open space in your house where you have some privacy, and move the energy in your body.

You don’t necessarily need to understand what you're feeling; you just want to be present to it. Trust that your body and Higher Self know how to move this energy. Notice where you feel the most sensation and bring your attention there. Deepen into the feeling, letting the mind go. There’s no need to create a story or figure out the why behind the emotion. Simply feel. Let the body move how it naturally wants to, and use your breath and voice to move energy as well.

If there’s one specific body area to focus on during this practice, it would be your womb space and/or sexual area. Scorpio rules the genitals, and Venus is related to sexual intimacy. This New Moon is highly supportive of releasing dense energy and emotions in this part of the body. Bring your awareness to this part of yourself, and simply tune in to how it feels there. How does the energy want to move here?

If you are meant to know something, trust that you will know it. You can ask your womb and/or sexual center, “Is there anything I am meant to know or learn? What do you wish for me to know, see, or feel?”

Allow the energy and your body to move how it naturally wants to move. Surrender to the process, trusting your body and Higher Self to guide you, even if it doesn’t make sense or the mind doesn’t understand. This is deeper than the mind. This is the feminine; it is embodied and energetic.

If it feels right, you can take the embodied meditation one step further by connecting to the earth beneath your feet. Perhaps you imagine roots growing out from your feet, or if you’re sitting, from your pelvic region. Let your roots grow down, down, down, as far down as they wish to go.

Feel this connection to the earth. When it feels right, invite the healing energy of Mother Gaia to enter your roots and travel back up to your body. Invite the energy to travel to your sexual center and/or womb space. Allow it to fill it. This space is being cleansed, loved, and healed by the earth.

Maybe this energy continues to travel throughout your body, to wherever feels dense, stuck, or painful. Perhaps it fills your heart and goes all the way to your mind. Trust the energy and allow it to flow wherever it wishes to.

Imagine that it is a river of cleansing energy, collecting debris and sludge in your system. Once it has gone to where it is meant to go, imagine this river of healing, cleansing energy traveling back down into your roots and entering the deep earth, carrying with it all the debris it picked up along the way. Now the earth will alchemize and compost this energy, turning it into life-giving sustenance.

Visualize your roots coming back into your body. Be in this space for a moment, noticing how your body feels. Slowly come back to the room around you and gently transition out of the space, taking your time and thanking your body, your higher self, and the earth for facilitating this cleansing and healing process.

May you be gentle with yourself on this Libra New Moon. Anchor into the love within your heart, and know that your worth can never be taken or given to you. It is inherent. You are always worthy and loved. Deepen into this love and let it shine out from within you. Allow your emotions to flow and trust that whatever arises from the depths of your being is what you are now meant to heal, learn from, and release.

With love,
