Diving into the Depths of Our Psyches to Find the Truth of Who We Are

The New Moon in Pisces, on March 18th, at 9:23 p.m. EST, is a time for planting seeds in the fertile soils of our psyches. This lunar cycle of rebirth overlaps with a greater cycle, that of the astrological new year and spring equinox. Occurring just a few days before the equinox, this is a moment in time for setting intentions for the year ahead.

This New Moon invites us to swim in the waters of our subconscious, to envision a new dream for humanity, and to welcome change as a necessary part of growth. As you read through the different themes, allow your heart and body to be part of the process. Notice what stands out to you, and trust that whatever pings your awareness is what you are meant to explore during this Pisces New Moon.

New Moon in Pisces Overview

With the Sun and Moon at 28 degrees of Pisces, this is our opportunity to truly delve into the gifts and lessons of the Piscinean archetype before moving fully into Aries. Pisces is the sign of mutable water, and can be thought of as water in the form of fog or mist, rising into the ether.

Just as the steam rises, our consciousness in Pisces wants to “rise” to a higher dimension. This is the spiritual domain, as well as the land of fantasy, dreams, imagination, and illusion. As such, this is a highly supportive time for meditating, dream interpretation, and altered states of consciousness to receive visions. The key is to stay grounded, or else one may become scattered or disoriented in the process.

This New Moon is sextile — to the same degree — Uranus in Taurus. As the symbol for spiritual awakenings, surprising insights, and revolutionary change, Uranus supports our spiritual practice and vision quests. However, his energy can be destabilizing, so again, we must stay grounded and centered as much as possible during this time.

This placement also points to accepting change in our lives. In Taurus, Uranus disrupts and destabilizes our sense of security, inner values, and material resources. Because it is in a supportive aspect to the New Moon, we may see beneficial changes in those areas of life. For instance, we may become more connected or aware of our values or acquire a material object that we’ve been wanting.

It may also be true that what Uranus disrupts in this area of life may be unsettling now, but supports us in the long run. He is soon to move into the final degree of Taurus, which is called the anaredic degree. This degree is known to be a harsher expression of the overall energy, as if it is having one last burst of energy before moving into the next sign.

As we can see in our world, there are jolting surprises and revolutionary change occurring seemingly everyday. The New Moon, in sextile to Uranus, is asking us to welcome this change to the degree we can. It may seem horrible and chaotic now, but for a rebirth to occur, the old must break apart and be dismantled. That is what we are seeing now, and while this is easy to see on the world stage, it is also happening for us individually.

Pisces is a sign of the in-between. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is not quite spring but not quite winter. It is the sign of having one foot in reality and the other in the spirit (or fantasy) realm. It is the transition time between death and rebirth. It is the complete dissolution of self, where we become one with all that is, before once again being reborn as an individual form of consciousness in Aries.

This is the process of change, of metamorphosis. The caterpillar goes through a complete cellular deconstruction and reconstruction before emerging as a butterfly. We are being called to surrender, to dissolve, to release attachments and identities, and come into union with who we truly are. Who are you when you remove every layer of identity? What is left when you are completely stripped bare?

This in-between time is the fertile darkness. Just as the seeds in the ground are soon to sprout and emerge into the light, there is a stirring within our own psyches calling us deeper, before we are symbolically reborn into the light.

Reflective Questions

  • What intentions do I want to plant for this next lunar cycle and this next year?

  • What is dissolving in my life? What attachments or identities am I ready to release?

  • How do I feel about change? What changes am I seeing in my life? How can I support myself in embracing change?

  • What spiritual practices am I called to explore this New Moon?

  • What’s been stirring from deep within that I am meant to bring my consciousness to?

  • What recurring themes or symbols have I been seeing in my dreams? What might these be trying to show me?

Mercury Conjunct the North Node: Exploring the Depths of Our Psyches

Another placement supporting us to go deep within during this New Moon is Mercury conjunct the North Node in Pisces. Mercury is the messenger of the Gods, and can travel between the upper and lower worlds. In other words, this archetype can easily move between regular consciousness and subconsciousness.

While retrograde, Mercury is traveling through the underworld. This supports our ability to enter an altered state of consciousness and explore the depths of our psyche.

Conjunct the North Node, this placement is reminding us that in order to grow, we must face our own underworld. While we may encounter old wounds or unprocessed emotions, this is also where we come face-to-face with our deeper truth, with our power. Herein lie the gifts we have that we’ve locked away out of subconscious fear or conditioning.

Traversing our inner psyches is what unlocks our oracle and psychic gifts of intuition and inner knowing. It is here that we come into the remembrance of who we truly are and our innate connection with all that is. This is where we learn how to heal ourselves, to see patterns of behavior that we couldn’t see before, and to gain clarity on challenges we’ve been facing. This is the realm of our Higher Self, the wise one within, and our spirit guides — this is where we hear their voice and can follow their guidance.

However, it is often the case that “on top” of the gifts or the next phase of our evolution is the energy that we are meant to purge and release. There cannot be reconstruction without the deconstruction of the old. Be courageous, anchor into faith, and be gentle with yourself in this process. Only go as far as you are meant to go. Allow your inner Mercury to guide you to your underworld to receive the guidance, healing, and gifts awaiting you there.

It is all within you, for within your inner world is a portal full of light. And this light is the sacred light of the infinite one, and from this, we realize, we are all emanations of the same light. Like light hitting a prism, scattering it into a fractal rainbow, we too are individual forms of the same light.

Reflective Questions:

  • What practices help me enter a deep meditative state where I can explore my inner world?

  • What sensations, feelings, visions, or thoughts are stirring deep within me?

  • What themes, memories, or old wounds have been coming to the surface? What might they be teaching me?

  • What does it feel like to connect with my inner truth? What does that mean to me?

  • What guidance am I receiving deep within? How can I honor this guidance?

New Moon Conjunct Saturn and Neptune: Dreaming a New Vision for Humanity

In Pisces, we explore the depths of ourselves. We come into wholeness and recognition of our oneness with all that is. In Aries, we recognize our individuality. This New Moon is in an out-of-sign conjunction with Saturn and Neptune in Aries. The Sun and Moon will continue to come into closer alignment with these planets in the days preceding this New Moon.

This placement is reminding us to honor our sovereignty and individuality while maintaining our connection to all that is. It is recognizing the duality, the both/and that we are one with the universe and also an individual expression of life. Through this understanding, we can better honor each other's sovereignty and interconnectedness.

This placement is also calling us to dream a new vision for humanity. We are entering a new cycle in human evolution, and it is up to us, as a collective, to direct this change in consciousness.

Saturn and Neptune are teaching us the principles of manifesting. If you’ve been following astrology over the past year, you know this is an ongoing theme with the Saturn-Neptune conjunction.

There is true power in our dreams, in our detailed intentions and prayers. Now (and the following Aries season) is a time for honing our desires. We can use the energy of Pisces to our advantage by imagining what it is we truly long for. This vision is a prayer, not only for ourselves, but also for the collective. Then, we can call upon the movement forward energy of Aries and the support of Saturn to ground this dream into reality and form.

That said, Saturn is also the lord of karma: he teaches that every action and choice has a ripple effect on our reality. His wisdom atones for the old adage: Be careful what you wish for. In deepening into our desires, we need to be discerning about where this desire is arising from. Sometimes our desires are rooted in a seed of fear, or an old wound is motivating our ambitions. This can be unconscious, which is why it’s so important to go deep within, to your inner truth, to excavate the source of your longing.

Is your longing rooted in love, harmony, and the evolution of your soul? Or is it rooted in fear, attachment, karmic baggage, or egoic desires? Discernment is key.

Reflective Questions:

  • What do I experience when I reflect on my individuality and simultaneously my connection with all that is?

  • How can I honor my individuality while also honoring my connection with all that is?

  • What desires or longings are stirring deep within my heart?

  • What choices am I called to make, and what are the potential ripple effects of those choices?

  • If my desires are rooted in an old wound or fear, what is the deeper truth of that desire? How can I meet this need within me in a conscious and balanced way?

Practice Ideas

As the sign of mutable water, this Pisces New Moon is a time for honoring the water element. Water is a carrier for information, codes, and frequencies. During this New Moon, attune to the water, whether that be your shower, your drinking water, or a nearby body of water. Honor it. Speak to it. Connect with it from within your heart. Connect with the rivers of flowing water within you, thank them, and fill them with brilliant, healing light.

Give yourself space to enter an altered state of consciousness, whether that be through a guided shamanic journey, prolonged meditation, ritual, or plant medicine. Whatever practices take you to a place deep within, those are the ones to do during this New Moon. Afterwards, make sure to ground and integrate the experience.

The process of death and rebirth is a key theme, not only for this New Moon, but for this time in our human evolution. We are going through it individually and collectively. On the spring equinox, Friday, March 20th, join our Shadow•n•Soul community for an online workshop experience that guides you into this territory. In Rebirth: An Alchemical Masterclass, you’ll honor the processes of death that have occurred within you throughout Winter, as well as celebrate the version of Self and life you’re stepping into this Spring.

Along with these practice ideas, take some time to dream a new vision for yourself and humanity. Perhaps you journal or imagine it in your mind’s eye. Explore what your life would look like, and how you would feel, if you already had what you deeply longed for. Imagine what humanity would look like if joined together in a collective dream of healing, love, repair, and expanded heart consciousness. Bless the dream, and then let it go, surrendering it to the Divine within and without.

May we come together in a shared prayer, a united dream, for healing across the planet. For  love to stir within our hearts, for us to remember the sacredness of life, and that we are all divine light expressing ourselves through different forms. May we honor our Mother Earth: the water, the air, the land, the animals, the plant kingdom, and each other. And so it is.

With love,
