Revitalizing our Routines and Evolving our Channels of Communication

The New Moon in Virgo, on September 10th at 11:09 PM EST, is calling for us to reflect on our day-to-day lives and how we communicate with others. We want to think about the word integrity: what it means to us and what it means to live in integrity.

We are now leaving an intense eclipse portal. The energy is shifting as a new lunar cycle unfolds, and for a moment, everything settles and calms down. However, this is a preparatory New Moon, for the energy will start to build again. Now is a time for grounding, reflecting, and setting clear intentions for the weeks ahead.

The stars and planets are here to guide us, personally and collectively, in how to best navigate the time we’re in. They are our mirrors, reflecting back to us the challenges we are meant to be aware of and the wisdom on how to move forward. Let us now explore their symbolic wisdom for this New Moon in Virgo and how we can integrate their lessons into the coming month.

New Moon in Virgo Overview

New Moons mark the start of a new chapter, initiating the next lunar cycle. They are a time for reflection, decompression, and setting intentions for the upcoming lunar month. The significations of the sign the New Moon is in — and how the planets are interacting with each other — help us to align our intentions and reflections with the current astrological energies.

This New Moon is at 18 degrees of Virgo. Before we dive into what that means, it’s also important to lay the foundation of what else is occurring. On the same day of the New Moon, Venus enters Scorpio, Mercury enters Libra, and Uranus stations retrograde. All of these planets are involved in powerful configurations that help set the tone for this New Moon, which we’ll explore in more depth below.

Virgo is the sign of mutable earth and is ruled by the planet Mercury (making Mercury the ruler of this New Moon). Mercury rules intellect, communication, speech, translation, interpretation, ideas, and knowledge. He is the messenger of the gods and can travel between worlds, such as from our inner world to the outer world.

Virgo, as an earth sign, grounds mental activity into physical reality. It takes the idea and makes it manifest. It is incredibly good at analyzing details, seeing patterns, and breaking things down into smaller parts to better understand how they work.

It is also the sign of service, physical health, and our day-to-day routines. In its highest expression, it helps ground its opposite sign, Pisces, which then becomes embodied spirituality. Virgo is the Earth Priestess. She who is fully connected to her body, the land beneath her feet, her present reality, and her responsibilities while maintaining a connection to the spirit within and around her. She is deeply connected to her integrity and doing the right thing based on her values, beliefs, and what she knows to be true.

For this New Moon, we want to reflect on where and how these themes show up in our own lives. Do we separate our “spiritual time” from our regular day-to-day activities? Do we act one way in our spiritual time, and another way outside of it? Virgo calls us to integrate the parts of ourselves that we separate so that we live with more integrity and honesty.

This is also a time to reflect on our daily routines, habits, and health. Are our daily routines and habits supporting our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing? In what ways are we called to try something different or let go of a habit that no longer serves?

With Uranus stationing retrograde the day of the New Moon, his power is amplified. The planet of surprises, rebellion, freedom, breaking away from the old, and divine insights is calling for us to think outside the box. Change up your routine; add something new, fun, and exciting; do it in a different order — this can help us refresh our relationship to our daily schedule.

As the great disruptor, he is also encouraging us to practice pattern interrupt. If there’s a habit or pattern we wish to change or let go of, we want to reflect on how we can help ourselves shift the attention away from that mental groove.

With addictions and habitual patterns, the change often comes in the moment we realize we are in that mental groove and choose to do something different. This isn’t always an easy thing to do, so you want to think about what would help you shift your focus to something else.

Funnily enough, my cat was my most recent teacher of this concept. She has been afraid of the sound of the pressure cooker whenever we release the seal. Whenever I use it, I’ve been talking to her — letting her know when I’m going to do it and telling her everything is okay when the pressure is released.

Just the other day, I started to release the steam, and she immediately reacted by jumping up and was about to run away like she normally does. But this time, she paused. She listened to my reassurance and decided to settle back down in her chair. In that moment, she was teaching her nervous system that everything was okay.

That is how we can practice pattern interrupts in ourselves. When we habitually or impulsively react or start doing the pattern, pause, and encourage yourself to try something different instead. Sometimes it’s a phrase or mantra we repeat to ourselves, and sometimes it’s an action we take. Go within, seek the wise one within, and learn what would best support you in interrupting the pattern. It’s not easy, but it’s the start to changing the mental and nervous system responses we have.

While it’s important to reflect on the improvements we can make in our lives, it’s equally important to notice the ways we already show up and take good care of ourselves. The shadow side of Virgo is perfectionism, self-criticism, self-judgment, and trying to control everything about ourselves and our reality. In this way, we also want to reflect on the ways we might be too hard on ourselves.

Perhaps this New Moon isn’t a time for trying to do more or working harder to “be better.” Maybe it’s a time to do less. Maybe the healthiest and most supportive thing you could do for yourself is to simply rest and just be.

This New Moon is about finding balance between knowing you are whole just as you are and noticing the patterns, habits, or routines that are not fully supporting you physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is about noticing these things with self-love and compassion, rather than self-judgment, criticism, and negative self-talk.

Speaking of negative self-talk, one of the most important things to pay attention to around this New Moon is your communication patterns. How do you speak to yourself and others? Our inner Mercury is now being supported by the outer planets, who are calling for healing and transformation.

Transforming our Inner Mercury

During the New Moon in Virgo, Mercury at 0 degrees of Libra is in a powerful Kite formation. He forms a Grand Air Trine with Pluto at 3 degrees Aquarius and Uranus at 5 degrees Gemini. At the same time, he is opposing Neptune at 3 degrees Aries, who is sextile to Uranus and Pluto.

We are being called to reflect on the ways we communicate with the people around us, especially our romantic partners and close friends (Libra). Pluto is revealing how our shadows affect the way we speak to others. He shows us how we may be misusing our power through our words to get what we want.

Simultaneously, Mercury trine Pluto helps us to dive into our shadow and subconscious realm with more clarity and understanding. We may have an easier time translating triggers and sneaky shadow behaviors and tracing them back to their root.

Uranus trine Mercury is calling on us to break free from communication patterns that no longer serve. As the higher octave of Mercury, representing Higher Mind and Cosmic Consciousness, her is reminding us of our multidimensionality.

We can access different layers of consciousness than just our normal, day-to-day ways of thinking. We can communicate with our bodies, our Higher Selves, and Spirit Guides. We can talk to the Earth, trees, plants, animals, and elements. We can commune with the cosmos, the planets, and even galactic beings. Our consciousness can travel between realms, and a healthy, clear inner Mercury is what assists us in doing so.

Neptune opposing Mercury can be a tricky aspect to navigate. It can create confusion and miscommunication, often showing up in conversation with others. One party may not understand or misinterpret the other and vice versa. We want to be aware of this around the New Moon — if the conversation is spiraling and the point has left the room, it may be best to pause and recenter before continuing.

On the other hand, this opposition can help us pick up on the energetics and emotions beyond just the words we’re hearing. It can support us in seeing the heart and intention of the other, the meaning beneath the words.

These outer planets are supporting the development of our Mystic Mind. The mind aligned with the heart. Becoming a clearer channel for wisdom to flow through and deeper levels of communication to take place.

It is calling for our inner Mercury to evolve — the part of ourselves that translates and communicates our inner world to our outer world. We are being called to transform and evolve our minds and the way we think. This is an opportunity to “up level” our communication and interpretive skills, not only in our daily conversations but also with the world around us.

Venus at the Gate to the Underworld

On the morning of the New Moon, Venus — the feminine planet of beauty, partnership, love, and inner values — enters the mysterious waters of Scorpio. In doing so, she forms a tight T-square as she opposes Chiron and squares Pluto.

Not only is she now in the sign of the underworld, but she is also square to its ruler, as Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio. And what’s more, she is now in her retrograde shadow and will station retrograde on October 3rd. She will form an exact square to Pluto and an opposition with Chiron three times before, during, and after her retrograde cycle.

This is not an easy transit as the lover goddess is plunged into the underworld. This is to confront her shadows and bring love and beauty to the “ugly,” disturbing, shameful, or taboo.

We can see it as a “clean up” time, where we will be pushed to address things in our shadow about our own feminine nature. We want to thoughtfully observe how the toxic feminine may show up in our lives, such as emotional manipulation, passive aggressiveness, or self-sacrifice.

This is also about power dynamics, unhealthy relationships and attachment patterns, and codependency versus interdependency. It will likely bring up things around sexuality and our relationship to sex, as well as our relationship to our body, emotions, and intuition.

The things we deem shameful or unlovable about ourselves may be brought to the surface. With Chiron in the mix, we may have experiences that bring up old wounds, especially around our feminine nature, sexuality, and relationship to self. This could be a time for lovingly accepting, addressing, and integrating these parts of self back into wholeness.

Because this is the first of the three squares with Pluto, and Venus has not gone retrograde yet, this is a preparatory time before the energy intensifies. In relation to Virgo, this is a time for prioritizing self-care habits and clarifying what truly supports our nervous system. What does it mean to heal, love, and integrate the things we don't want to accept about ourselves? What does it mean to meet our imperfections with love and grace rather than criticism and self-judgment?

In addition, we want to reflect on our one-on-one relationships and if there’s anything we need to address or bring into the light. This includes romantic partners, business partners, close friends, and family members. Mercury trine Pluto will support us in this and help us articulate our inner thoughts to the outer world.

While the road ahead for our inner feminine may be challenging, it is an initiation leading us into deeper relationship and embodiment of Her. It is a time for purification and release, helping us to live with more integrity and alignment with our core values. On the other side of this rebirth, we may reclaim parts of ourselves we didn’t know were lost and step more fully into our Divine Feminine nature.

Reflective Questions

  • What does integrity mean to me? What does it mean to live in integrity?

  • Is there anything I can add to — and/or take away from — my daily routine to support my physical well-being?

  • Is there anything I can add to — and/or take away from — my daily routine to support my emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being?

  • What self-care habits support my nervous system and help me feel grounded, present, and at ease?

  • What is my internal dialogue like throughout the day?

  • When I make a mistake, or something doesn’t work out the way I wanted it to, what is my reaction? How do I speak to myself or think about the situation?

  • In what ways can I improve or evolve the ways I speak to myself and others?

  • Is there anyone or anything (plants, animals, spirit guides, etc) I’m feeling called to move into deeper communication with? What would that look like?

  • Is there anything in my close relationships I need to address that I’ve been pushing away?

  • Have any old wounds risen to the surface recently? In attuning to my Higher Self, how am I meant to address or release what’s coming up for me?

  • What is my relationship to my inner feminine? How am I being called to move into a deeper relationship with Her?

Practice Ideas

One of the best practices you can do on and around the time of the New Moon in Virgo is that of the peaceful, thoughtful observer. Set an intention (and perhaps a few reminders) to observe your thoughts and actions throughout a day. How are we to know what habits or thought patterns of ours may not serve if we aren’t fully aware of them in the first place?

This practice isn’t to judge or change anything right away, just to simply observe. How do you speak to those around you when you get stressed? How do you communicate with your partner? Is it different from how you speak to other people? What is your internal dialogue like? There is so much we learn when we spend time observing ourselves.

The New Moon in Virgo is also a great time to journal and have conversations with others about what’s coming up for you. In a very tangible and practical sense, this is a time for organizing and cleaning up something, whether that’s your schedule, your home, vehicle, yard, etc. If you feel the call to reassess your time management skills or do a deep clean of your house, the energy is highly supportive of such activities.
